The X-Road digital infrastructure for data exchange moves toward a standards-based model

March 16, 2026

DESCRIPCIÓN

X-Road is a digital infrastructure used by public administrations and organizations in several countries to exchange data securely without central intermediaries. This system allows each entity to retain control over its information while sharing data with other organizations within a common trust framework.

The platform is now entering a new phase with its evolution toward a data space architecture aligned with international standards. The upcoming X-Road 8 release will incorporate technologies connected to the global data space ecosystem, such as the Dataspace Protocol (DSP) and the Decentralized Claims Protocol (DCP).

This step connects X-Road with the work of international organizations promoting sovereign and interoperable data spaces, including IDSA, Gaia-X, and the Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC). The evolution of this infrastructure illustrates how public-sector digital platforms can adapt to new data-sharing models based on internationally recognized standards across the data economy ecosystem.
