September 11, 2025
DESCRIPCIÓN
A study requested by the European Commission shows that language technologies could boost intra-EU trade by up to €360 billion, enhance competitiveness and productivity, and strengthen cultural and linguistic diversity within the EU. The report highlights that 70% of users prefer to browse in their native language, presenting a significant opportunity for SMEs that can provide multilingual content and leverage machine translation tools. Machine translation alone could increase intra-EU trade for European SMEs by €300 billion.
The study also emphasizes the importance of having large volumes of multilingual language data to train AI systems and ensure the EU’s digital sovereignty. In this context, it refers to the recent launch of ALT-EDIC and the Language Data Space, initiatives aimed at facilitating the sharing of language data and supporting the development of generative AI applications in European languages.
